Deuteronomy_Chapter 5
Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them, “O Israelites, listen to the laws and regulations that I have spoken to you today, learn from them, and keep them.”.
The Lord our God made a covenant with us on Mount Horeb.
This covenant was not made with our ancestors, but with us who live here today.
The Lord spoke to you face to face from the fire on the mountain.
(At that time, I stood between the Lord and you, to proclaim the word of the Lord to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up to the mountain.)
Say, I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.
You must not have any other gods besides me.
Do not carve idols for yourself, nor do you make any likeness, like a hundred things in heaven, earth, earth, or water.
Do not bow down to those idols, nor serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. I will punish those who hate me, from the father and son until the third and fourth generations.
I will show mercy to those who love me and keep my commandments for a thousand generations.
Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. For he who falsely takes the name of the Lord will not be held innocent by the Lord.
Keep the Sabbath as a holy day, as commanded by the Lord your God.
Six days I will toil and do all your work,
But the seventh day is a Sabbath to be observed to the Lord your God. On this day, you and your children, your servants and maidservants, cows, donkeys, livestock, and the sojourners living in your city shall not do any work, so that your servants and maidservants may rest in peace like you.
Remember also that you were a servant in the land of Egypt. The Lord your God brought you out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore, the Lord your God commands you to keep the Sabbath.
Honor your parents as the Lord your God has commanded, so that you may be blessed and your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God has given you.
Do not kill.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal.
No false testimony or framing is allowed.
Do not covet the wife of a lover. Do not covet a man’s house, field, servants, oxen, donkeys, or all that he has.
These words are spoken with a loud voice by the Lord to all your congregation on the mountain, from the midst of fire, clouds, and darkness. Besides, no other words were added. He wrote these words on two stone tablets and handed them to me.
At that time, flames burned the mountain, and you heard the sound coming out of the darkness. All the leaders and elders of your tribe come to me,
And he said, See, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and his power, and we have heard his voice coming out of the fire. Today we see that God speaks to men, and they still live.
Now that this great fire is about to consume us, why should we risk our lives? If we hear the voice of the Lord our God again, we will die.
Who among all flesh has ever heard the voice of the living God come out of the fire, as we have heard that we can still live?
Go near and listen to all the words that the Lord our God will say to you. Tell us all the words he says to you, and we will obey and do them.
The Lord has heard what you said to me. The Lord said to me, I have heard the words of this people. What they said is all.
May they have such a reverence for me and always keep all my commandments, so that they and their descendants may be blessed forever.
You go tell them, go back to the tent.
As for you, stand with me and I will give you all the commandments, laws, and ordinances. Teach them to do it in the land that I have given them as an inheritance.
Therefore, you must keep and do as the Lord your God has commanded you, and do not deviate from the left or right.
Do all that the Lord your God has commanded you to do, so that you may live and be blessed, and that your days may be long in the land you will inherit.
