Joshua_Chapter 7
The Israelites have committed sins in the things that should be destroyed. Because among the tribes of Judah, Achan, the son of Carmi, the grandson of Zadea and the great grandson of Zerah, took the thing that should be destroyed. The anger of the Lord was raging against the Israelites.
At that moment, Joshua sent messengers from Jericho to Ai, which is east of Bethel and near Bethaven, and commanded them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. They went up to spy on Ai city.
They returned to Joshua and said to him, “Not all the people need to go up, only two or three thousand people can go up and take Ai.”. Do not strain all the people, for there are few people there.
So about three thousand of the people went up there and fled in front of the people of Ai.
The people of Ai killed thirty-six of them and pursued them from the city gate until they reached Shebalim. They defeated them on the downhill slope. The hearts of the people are digested like water.
Joshua tore his clothes. He and the elders of Israel sprinkled ash on their heads and fell to the ground in front of the ark of the Lord until evening.
Joshua said, Alas. O Lord GOD, why did you lead this people across the Jordan River and deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, causing us to perish? It would be better if we lived on the other side of the Jordan River.
Lord, since the Israelites have turned their backs and fled in front of their enemies, what else can I say?
When the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of this land hear this, they will besiege us and destroy our name from the earth. What would you do for your name at that time?
The Lord commanded Joshua, ‘Get up.’. Why are you lying on the ground like this?
The Israelites have sinned and violated the covenant I commanded them, taking what is to be destroyed. Stealing and deceiving again, and putting the perishable in their furniture.
Therefore, the Israelites could not stand in front of their enemies. They turned their backs and fled in front of their enemies because they were cursed. If you do not remove the thing that should be destroyed from among you, I will no longer be with you.
Arise, sanctify the people, and say to them, sanctify yourselves, and prepare for tomorrow: for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, O Israel, there is an thing that is to be destroyed among you, and if you do not remove it, you will not be able to stand before your enemies.
In the morning, approach according to your tribes. The tribe that the Lord has taken shall come near according to their families. The family that the Lord has taken shall come near according to their families. The house that the Lord has taken shall approach one by one according to the number of people.
The person who is taken has something to be destroyed with him, and he and all his possessions will be burned by fire. Because he has broken the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done foolish things in Israel.
So Joshua got up early in the morning and brought the Israelites closer by tribe, taking out the tribe of Judah.
Bring the tribe of Judah closer and take the tribe of Zerah. Let the clans of Zerah approach one by one according to their families, and the one they take out is Sadi.
Let the families of Sadi approach one by one according to their population, and take out Achan the son of Carmi, the great grandson of Zerah and the grandson of Sadi, from the tribe of Judah.
Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I urge you to give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and confess your sins before him. Tell me what you have done and do not hide it from me.”.
Achan answered Joshua, saying, I have indeed sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. What I have done is so and so,
I saw a beautiful Shinah garment among the plunder, weighing two hundred shekels of silver and fifty shekels of gold. So I coveted these things and took them away. Now hidden in the field within my tent, silver is under my clothes.
Joshua sent people to run into the tent of Achan. That garment was indeed hidden in his tent, with silver underneath.
They took it out of the tent and brought it to Joshua and all Israel, and placed it before the Lord.
Joshua and all Israel brought Achan, the great grandson of Zerah, along with the silver, the garment, the piece of gold, Achan’s children, oxen, donkeys, sheep, tents, and all he had, to the valley of Achor.
Joshua said, Why have you implicated us? Today the Lord will cause you trouble. So all the Israelites stoned him to death, threw stones on him, and burned all his possessions with fire.
The crowd piled up a large pile of stones on Agan, which remains to this day. So the Lord changed his mind and did not let out his fierce anger. Therefore, that place is called the Valley of Achor, to this day (Achor means to implicate).
