Gospel of John_Chapter 11
There was a sick man named Lazarus who lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
This Mary is the one who wiped the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. Lazarus, who was sick, was her brother.
And the two of her sisters sent messengers to Jesus, saying, Lord, the one you love is sick.
When Jesus heard this, he said, This disease is not to die, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
Jesus had always loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.
When he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed in his place for two more days.
Then he said to his disciples, Let’s go back to Judea.
His disciples said, Rabbi, the Jews are about to stone you recently. Are you still going there?
Jesus replied, “Isn’t there twelve hours of daylight?”? When a person walks in the daytime, they will not fall because they see the light of this world.
If he walks in the dark, he will fall because he has no light.
Jesus said these things, and then he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep, and I will go and wake him up.
His disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he will surely recover.
Jesus spoke of his death. But they thought it meant they were sleeping as usual.
Jesus clearly told them that Lazarus was dead.
I rejoiced without being there, for your sake, so that you may believe. Now we can go to him.
Thomas, also known as Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go and die with him.
When Jesus arrived, he found out that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.
Bethany is not far from Jerusalem, about six miles away.
Many Jews came to visit Martha and Mary to comfort their brothers.
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, he went out to meet him. Mary still sat at home.
Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here long ago, my brother would not have died.
Even now, I know that no matter what you ask God for, God will give it to you.
Jesus said, Your brother will surely be resurrected.
Martha said, I know that in the resurrection at the end of the day, he will be resurrected.
Jesus said to him, “Resurrection is in me, and life is also in me.”. Those who believe in me, even if they die, will be resurrected.
Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?
Martha said, Lord, yes, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who will come into the world.
After Martha had said these words, she went back and secretly called her sister. Mary said, The master is here, calling you.
When Mary heard this, she quickly got up and went to Jesus.
At that time, Jesus had not yet entered the village and was still at the place where Martha met him.
The Jews who were comforting Mary at home, seeing her quickly getting up and going out, followed her and thought she was going to the grave to cry.
When Mary arrived at Jesus and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, Lord, if you had been here long ago, my brother would not have died.
When Jesus saw her crying, and saw the Jews who came with her also crying, he lamented in his heart and was very sorrowful.
So, where did you place him? They replied, “Please come and see, Lord.”.
Jesus cried.
The Jews said, “See how sincerely he loves this person.”.
Some of them said, “Since he has opened the eyes of a blind man, cannot he make this person immortal?”?
Jesus sighed in his heart and came to the grave. That tomb is a hole, with a stone blocking it.
Jesus said, Move away the stones. The sister of the dead man, Martha, said to him, Lord, he must be stinking now, because he has been dead for four days.
Jesus said, Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?
They moved the stone away. Jesus lifted up his eyes and looked up to heaven, saying, Father, I thank you for listening to me.
I also know that you often listen to me, but I say this for the people standing around, to make them believe that you have sent me.
And when he had said these things, he called out with a loud voice, saying, Lazarus come out.
The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus said to them, Untie him and let him go.
Many of the Jews who came to see Mary believed in Jesus when they saw what he had done.
But some of them also went to see the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
The chief priests and the Pharisees gathered in the council and said, “What shall we do if this man does many miracles?”?
If left to him like this, everyone should trust him. The Romans will also come and take our land and our people.
There was a man among them named Caiaphas, who was a high priest this year, and he said to them, Do you know anything.
Do not want one person to die for the people, so that the whole country may perish? This is your benefit.
He said this not out of himself, but because he was a high priest this year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for this country.
Not only will he die for this country, but he will also gather all the scattered people of God into one.
From that day on, they conspired to kill Jesus.
So Jesus no longer clearly walked among the Jews, so he left there and went to a place near the wilderness. When they arrived at a city called Ephraim, they stayed there with their disciples.
The Jewish Passover is approaching. Many people go up from the countryside to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the festival.
They searched for Jesus and stood in the temple, saying to each other, What do you think? Will he not come to celebrate the festival?
At that time, the chief priests and the Pharisees had already commanded that if anyone knew where Jesus was, they should declare it so that they could go and take him.
