Acts of the Apostles_Chapter 10
There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, who was a centurion of the Italian camp.
He is a devout person, and he and his whole family fear God. They give many alms to the people and often pray to God.
One day, around the ninth hour of the month, he saw in a vision an angel of God coming in to him and saying, Cornelius.
Cornelius fixed his gaze on him and was frightened, saying, Lord, what is it? The angel said, Your prayers and alms have been remembered before God.
Now send someone to Joppa and invite Simon, who is called Peter.
He lives with a tanner named Simon by the seaside. The house is on the beach.
After the angel who spoke to him went, Cornelius called two family members and a devout soldier who often served him.
Tell them all this and send them to Joppa.
The next day, as they approached the city, Peter went up to the roof to pray around noon.
I feel hungry and want to eat. While the family was preparing their meal, Peter’s soul wandered outside.
Seeing the sky open, something descended like a big cloth. Tied to the four corners, let down on the ground.
There are all kinds of four legged animals on the ground, insects, and birds in the sky inside.
Another voice said to him, “Peter, get up, slaughter and eat.”.
But Peter said, Lord, this is not allowed; I have never eaten anything common or unclean.
The second time a voice spoke to him, saying, What God has cleansed, do not make it a common thing.
After doing this three times in a row, the object immediately withdrew into the sky.
Peter was wondering in his heart what the vision he saw meant. The people sent by Cornelius had already visited Simon’s house and stood outside the door,
Shouting and asking, does Simon, who is called Peter, live here.
While Peter was still contemplating the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Three people are coming to find you.”.
Get up, go down, go with them, don’t doubt. Because I sent them here.
So Peter went down to those people and said, “I am the one you are looking for.”. Why are you here.
They said, Cornelius the centurion was a righteous man who feared God and was praised by the whole nation of Judea. He was instructed by a holy angel to invite you to his house and hear your words.
Peter invited them in and stayed overnight. The next day, he got up and went with them, along with several brothers from Joppa.
The next day, they entered Caesarea. Cornelius has invited his relatives and close friends, waiting for them.
As soon as Peter entered, Cornelius met him and knelt down at his feet to worship him.
But Peter pulled him up and said, Get up, I am also a man.
Peter talked to him and went in, and saw many people gathering there,
And he said to them, You know that it is not lawful for Jews to associate with people from other countries. But God has instructed me that no one should be considered vulgar or unclean.
So when I was invited, I came without hesitation. Now, may I ask, what’s the point of calling me here?
Cornelius said, Four days ago at this time, while I was guarding the prayer of the beginning of the year at home, suddenly there was a man standing before me, dressed in a bright robe,
Saying, Cornelius, your prayers have been heard, and your alms have been remembered before God.
Send someone to Joppa and invite Simon, who is called Peter, to stay with a tanner named Simon by the sea.
So I immediately sent someone to invite you, it’s great that you came. Now we are all before God, listening to all the words that the Lord has commanded you.
Peter spoke up and said, I really see that God does not favor people.
For among all nations, those who fear the Lord and do righteousness are accepted by the Lord.
God preached the gospel of peace through Jesus Christ (who is the Lord of all) and gave this word to the Israelites.
After John preached baptism, these words spread throughout Judea from Galilee onwards.
You know how God anointed Jesus the Nazarene with the Holy Spirit and power. He travels around doing good deeds and healing those who are suppressed by the devil. Because God is with him.
We bear witness to all his actions in the land of the Jews and Jerusalem. They even hung him on the wood and killed him.
On the third day, God resurrected him and revealed him,
It is not revealed to everyone, but to those whom God has chosen beforehand to bear witness against him, even to us who ate and drank with him after his resurrection from the dead.
He commanded us to preach to everyone, proving that he was established by God to be the judge of the living and the dead.
The prophets also bear witness against him, saying, All who believe in him shall receive forgiveness of sins through his name.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all those who heard the word.
Those believers who came with Peter after circumcision were amazed when they saw that the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured on the Gentiles.
Because I heard them speak in tongues, praising God for his greatness.
So Peter said, “Who can forbid water from baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit like us?”?
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. They invited Peter to stay for a few more days.
