The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

Send someone to spy out the land of Canaan that I have given to the Israelites, and send one person from each tribe as their leader.

Moses sent them out of the wilderness of Balaam as the Lord commanded. They are all chiefs of the Israelites.

Their names belong to the tribe of Reuben, Shamua son of Zachard.

Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

Of the tribe of Issachar, there was Ichar the son of Joser.

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hohiah the son of Nun.

Of the tribe of Benjamin, Pati the son of Raphu.

Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gadiel son of Sodi.

Of the tribe of Manasseh, the descendants of Joseph, were Gadi the son of Susi.

Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Kemali.

Of the tribe of Asher, Sether the son of Michael.

Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nabi the son of Benxi.

Of the tribe of Gad, Geuli the son of Machi.

This is the name of the people Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.

Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, saying, Go up from the south into the mountains,

Look at the land, the people living in it are strong or weak, many or few,

The place of residence is good or bad, and the camp is a fortified city.

Also, the soil is fertile and barren, with or without trees. You should have the courage to bring some fruits from that place. (At that time, it was the time when the grapes were first ripe.)

They went up to spy out the land, from the wilderness of Zin to Rehab, and even to the mouth of Hamath.

They went up from the south and arrived at Hebron. There were Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai from the Anak tribe. (Originally, the city of Hebron was built seven years earlier than the city of Zoan in Egypt.)

They arrived at the valley of Eshcol and cut down a vine from there, with a hanging of grapes on top. Two people carried it with poles and brought some pomegranates and figs.

(Because the hanging grapes that the Israelites cut from there were called the Valley of Eshcol.)

After forty days, they came back to spy on the land,

When they arrived at Kadesh in the wilderness of Balaam, they saw Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation of Israel. They reported to Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation, and showed them the fruits of the land.

And he told Moses, saying, We have come to the land to which you sent us, and it is indeed a land flowing with milk and honey. This is the fruit of that place.

However, the people who lived in that land were strong, and the cities were strong and spacious, and we saw the people of Anak there.

The Amalekites lived in the south. The Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites lived in the mountains. The Canaanites lived by the sea and by the Jordan River.

And Caleb comforted the people before Moses, saying, Let us immediately go up and take possession of that land. We are capable of winning.

But those who went with him said, We cannot go up against that people, because they are stronger than us.

Some of the scouts reported evil faith to the Israelites about the land they were exploring, saying, ‘The land we are exploring and passing through is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we see there are of great stature.’.

We saw the Anak people there, who were great men. They are descendants of great men. From our perspective, we are like grasshoppers. From their perspective, we are no exception.
