The livestock of the children of Reuben and Gad were extremely numerous. They saw that the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead were places for grazing livestock,

And he came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the congregation, and said,

Adar, Diben, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Eliari, Sheban, Nebo, Bevan,

The land that the Lord has taken in front of the Israelite assembly is a place for grazing livestock, and your servant also has livestock.

And he said, If we find favor in your sight, give us this land as an inheritance, and do not lead us across the Jordan River.

Moses said to the children of Gad and the children of Reuben, Did your brothers go to war and you sit here?

Why have you discouraged and discouraged the Israelites from going over and entering the land that the Lord has given them?

I previously sent your ancestors from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land, and they did the same.

When they went up to the valley of Eshcol to explore the land and returned, they made the Israelites discouraged and discouraged, and did not enter the land that the Lord had given them.

On that day, the anger of the Lord erupted, and he swore, saying,

Anyone over twenty years old who comes up from Egypt shall not see the land that I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not followed me wholeheartedly.

Only Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizite, and Joshua, the son of Nun, can see, because they are fully devoted to following me.

The anger of the Lord was raging against the Israelites, causing them to wander in the wilderness for forty years until the generation that did evil in the eyes of the Lord was destroyed.

Who knew that you rose up to succeed your ancestors and increase the number of sinners, causing the Lord to be greatly angry with Israel.

If you retreat and do not follow him, he will leave the Israelites in the wilderness, and you will cause the destruction of all these people.

The two tribes approached Moses and said, “We will build pens for livestock here and build cities for women and children.”.

We will bring our weapons and walk in front of the Israelites, so that we can lead them to their place. But our women and children will live in fortified cities because of the inhabitants of this land.

We will not go home until each Israelite inherits their own inheritance.

We do not receive the same industry as them in the area beyond the Jordan River, because our industry is located here on the east side of the Jordan River.

Moses said to them, “If you do this and go out to war with weapons before the Lord,

All armed men shall cross the Jordan River before the Lord, until he drives out his enemies,

The land has been subdued by the Lord, and then you can return and be innocent to the Lord and Israel. This land will also belong to you before the Lord.

If you do not do so, you will sin against the Lord, and you will know that your sin will catch up with you.

Now go and do what comes out of your mouth, build a city for your women and children, and build a pen for your flocks.

The children of Gad and the children of Reuben said to Moses, ‘Your servant will do as my lord has commanded you.’.

Our wives, children, flocks, and all livestock must stay in the cities of Gilead.

But all your servants who carry weapons shall go over to war before the Lord, as my lord has said.

So Moses gave orders to Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the chiefs of the tribes of Israel,

And if any of the children of Gad and the children of Reuben go to war with weapons before the Lord, and cross the Jordan River with you, and the land is subdued by you, then give them the land of Gilead as an inheritance.

If they go over with you without weapons, they will have an inheritance among you in the land of Canaan.

The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, ‘As the Lord commands your servants, so do your servants.’.

We will go over with weapons before the Lord and enter the land of Canaan, but the land that we have acquired on this side of the Jordan River will still belong to us.

Moses gave the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites and the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, including the land and surrounding cities, to the children of Gad and the children of Reuben, as well as to the half tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph.

The descendants of Gad built Diben, Ataroth, and Aroer,

Atharoth Shophan, Jazer, Jobiha,

Bernilla and Bethharan are fortified cities. They built a sheep pen again.

The descendants of Reuben built Heshbon, Eliari, and Kiriathaim,

Nebo, Baalmeon, and Sibimah (whose names have been changed), and gave the cities they built another name.

Machir, the son of Manasseh, and his descendants went to Gilead and occupied the land, driving out the Amorites there.

Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and his descendants lived there.

Jair, the son of Manasseh, went to take the villages of Gilead and called them Havoth Jair.

Noba went and took Kenah and its villages, and named Kenah after himself as Noba.
