Samuel's note_Chapter 11
After one year, when the kings went to war, David sent Joab to lead his servants and all Israel to war. They defeated the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. David still resides in Jerusalem.
One day, when the sun was low, David got up from bed and marched on the flat roof of the palace. He saw a woman bathing and looking very beautiful,
David sent someone to inquire who the woman was. Some people say that she is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.
David sent someone to fetch the woman. At that time, her menstrual cycle was cleansed. She came, David slept with her, and she went home.
So she became pregnant and sent someone to tell David, ‘I am pregnant.’.
David sent someone to Joab and said, “Send Uriah the Hittite to me.”. So Joab sent Uriah to David.
Uriah came, and David asked about Joab, the soldiers, and how the war was going.
David said to Uriah, “Go home and wash your feet.”. Uriah left the palace, and then the king gave him a portion of food.
But Uriah slept with his master’s servants outside the palace gate and did not go home.
Someone told David that Uriah did not go home. David asked Uriah, “Why didn’t you go home when you came from a long way?”?
Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and the army of Judah are living in tents. My lord Joab and his servants are camping in the field. Shall I go home to eat and drink, and sleep with my wife?”? I swear by the king and his life before him, and I will never do this.
David said to Uriah, “You are still staying here today, and I will send you tomorrow.”. So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next day.
David called Uriah and made him eat and drink before him, causing him to get drunk. In the evening, Uriah went out to stay with his lord’s servants and had not yet returned home.
The next morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and handed it over to Uriah to take with him.
It is written in the letter that Uriah will be sent forward to the most dangerous position, and you will retreat and cause him to be killed.
When Joab besieged the city, he knew that there were warriors among the enemy, so he sent Uriah there.
The people of the city came out to fight against Joab. Several of David’s servants were killed, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
So Joab sent messengers to tell David all the events of the war,
And he instructed the messenger, saying, Have you finished speaking to the king about all the things of war,
If the king is angry and asks you, “Why did you come near the city wall in battle?”? Do you not know that the enemy will shoot arrows from the city?
Who was it that once killed Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t it that a woman threw an upper millstone from the city and struck him, and he died at Tibeth? Why are you getting close to the city wall? Then say, Uriah the Hittite, the king’s servant, has also died.
The messenger stood up and came to David, reporting to him according to the words that Joab had commanded him.
The messenger said to David, “The enemy is stronger than us. They will go out to the suburbs to fight against us, and we will pursue them until we reach the gate of the city.”.
The archers shot the king’s servants from the city and killed several of them, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
The king said to the messengers, Tell Joab not to be troubled by this matter, for the sword shall devour one man or another, and there shall be no certainty. You just try your best to attack the city and overturn it. You can use these words to encourage Joab.
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband Uriah had died, she wept for him.
The days of mourning were over, and David sent someone to bring her to the palace. She became David’s wife and gave the chief physician a son. But the Lord was greatly displeased with what David had done.
