Samuel's note_Chapter 3

The house of Saul and the house of David fought for a long time. The David family is growing stronger day by day. The house of Saul is weakening day by day.

David had several sons in Hebron, and his eldest son Amnon was born to Ahinoam of Jezreel.

The second son, Kiriath, was born to Abigail, the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. The third son Absalom was born to Maacah, the daughter of Damai, king of Geshur.

The fourth son Adonijah was born to Hagi. The fifth son Shephatiah was born to Abithah.

The sixth son Ithnim was born to David’s wife Eglah. David’s six sons were all born in Hebron.

During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had great power in the house of Saul.

Saul had a concubine named Risbah, the daughter of Aia. One day, Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why do you have sex with my father’s concubines?”?

Abner was very angry because of the words of Ishbosheth, saying, Am I the head of a dog in Judah? Have you today rebuked me for this woman, because I treated your father Saul’s house, his brothers, and friends kindly and did not hand you over to David?

If I do not do as the Lord swore to David, depose the throne of Saul and establish the throne of David, so that he may rule over Israel and Judah, from Dan to Beersheba, may God punish me severely.

Ishbosheth was afraid of Abner and dared not answer a word.

Abner sent messengers to David and said on his behalf, “To whom does this kingdom belong?”? And he said, Make a covenant with me, and I will help you, so that all Israel may submit to you.

David said, okay. I make a contract with you. But there is one thing, if you do not bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see me, you will not be able to see me.

David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Return my wife Michal to me.”. She was hired by me with a hundred foreskin from the Philistines.

And Ishbosheth sent messengers to bring Michal back from her husband Padiel, the son of Laish.

Abner brought twenty people to Hebron to meet David, and David made a feast for Abner and the people he brought.

Abner said to David, “I will get up and gather all Israel to come to my lord the king, and make a covenant with you, so that you may reign according to your wishes.”. So David sent Abner away, and Abner went in peace.

Joab and David’s servants attacked the enemy and brought back a lot of plunder. At that time, Abner was not with David in Hebron, because David had already sent him and he had also gone in peace.

When Joab and his entire army arrived, someone told him that Abner, the son of Ner, had come to the king and the king had sent him away, and he had also gone in peace.

Joab went to the king and said, “What are you doing?”? Abner came to see you, why did you send him away and he disappeared?

You should know that Abner, the son of Ner, came to deceive you, to know your entry and exit, and all your actions.

Joab came out from David and sent messengers to pursue Abner, catching him up at the well of Selah and bringing him back, but David did not know.

Abner returned to Hebron, and Joab led him to the urn at the city gate, pretending to speak to him in secret. He pierced through his belly there, and he died. This is revenge for killing his brother Asahel.

When David heard this, he said, “The blood of Abner, the son of Ner, will never return to me or my kingdom before the Lord.”.

May the guilt of shedding his blood be on Joab’s head and on his father’s entire family. May there continue to be people in the house of Joab who suffer from leakage, lepers, those who go astray, those who are killed by the sword, and those who lack food and drink.

Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because he killed their brother Asahel during the war in Gibeon.

David commanded Joab and all the people who were with him, saying, Tear your clothes, tie sackcloth around your waist, and mourn before the coffin of Abner. King David also followed behind the coffin.

They buried Abner in Hebron. The king let out his voice and wept by the tomb of Abner, and all the people also wept.

The king mourned for Abner, saying, How could Abner die like a foolish man?

Your hands have not been bound, your feet have not been locked. You die, just like a person dying under the hands of a sinner. So all the people mourned for Abner again.

Before the sun set, all the people came to persuade David to eat, but David swore, ‘May God punish me severely if I eat or eat anything else before the sun set.’.

All the people rejoiced when they found out. All the people are pleased with what the king does.

On that day, all the people of Israel realized that killing Abner, the son of Ner, was not done by the king’s will.

The king said to his servants, Do you not know that a great man who was a commander of the army has died among the Israelites today?

Although I have been anointed as king, I am still weak today. These two sons of Zeluya are stronger than me. May the Lord repay the wicked according to their evil deeds.
