Jeremiah_Chapter 24

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took Jeconiah, the son of King Jehoiakim of Judah, and the leaders of Judah, as well as craftsmen and blacksmiths, captive from Jerusalem and brought them to Babylon. After this, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the Lord’s temple.

A basket is of excellent figs, as if they are just ripe. A basket of extremely bad figs, so bad they cannot be eaten.

So the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?”. I said, I see figs, very good, extremely bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: The Jews who have been taken captive, whom I have sent out of this land to the land of the Chaldeans, will I take care of them like these good figs, and I will do them good.

I will take care of them and bring them back to this land for their benefit. I will also establish them, not demolish them, plant them, and not uproot them.

I will give them a heart that knows me, knowing that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, because they will return to me with all their heart.

This is what the Lord says: I will deliver up King Zedekiah of Judah and his leaders, as well as the remaining people of Jerusalem in this land and the people of Judah who live in the land of Egypt, like the extremely bad fig that is so bad that it cannot be eaten.

I will deliver them up and throw them back and forth among all the nations of the earth, and they will suffer calamity. Wherever I drove them, they became insults, laughter, ridicule, and curses.

I will bring the sword, famine, and plague upon them, until they are destroyed from the land I have given them and their ancestors.
