Jeremiah_Chapter 20

Bashhur, the son of Immai the priest, was in charge of the temple of the Lord and heard Jeremiah prophecy about these things,

He struck the prophet Jeremiah and bound him with the shackles inside the high gate of Benjamin in the temple of the Lord.

The next day, Bashhur released Jeremiah from his shackles. So Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord did not call your name Bashhur, but he called you Magor Misabil.”.

For thus says the Lord, I will make you conscious of fear, and you will also make all your friends afraid. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and you will see them with your own eyes. I will deliver all the Jews into the hands of the king of Babylon, who will take them captive to Babylon and slaughter them with the sword.

And I will give all the goods and labor of this city, and all the treasures, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah, into the hands of their enemies. The enemy shall be taken as plunder to Babylon.

You, Bashhur, and all those who live in your house will be taken captive. You and your friends, who prophesy falsely to them, will all go to Babylon and die there and be buried there.

O Lord, you have advised me, and I have heard your advice. You have more power than me and have defeated me. I become a joke all day long, and everyone teases me.

Whenever I speak, I let out a mournful voice; I cry out, ‘There is violence and destruction.’. For the word of the Lord has become my reproach and mockery all day long.

If I say, I will no longer mention the Lord, nor speak in his name, then I feel as if there is a burning fire blocked in my bones, and I cannot resist it, unable to restrain myself.

I have heard many people’s slander, and there is fear all around. Even my close friends have spied on me, may I fall down and say, Let us accuse him, and we will also accuse him. Or if he is tempted, we can defeat him and seek revenge on him.

However, the Lord is with me like a terrible warrior. Therefore, those who persecute me will stumble and not be able to overcome. They will be greatly ashamed, a shame that will never be forgotten, because they walk without wisdom.

O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous and examines the heart and soul, let me see you avenging them, for I have revealed my cause to you.

Sing to the Lord. Praise the Lord. Because he saved the lives of the poor from the hands of the wicked.

May the day I was born be cursed. May my mother not be blessed on the day she gave birth to me.

Cursed be the man who brought great joy to my father by reporting to him that he had a son.

May that person be like the cities that the Lord has overturned without regret. May he hear cries in the morning and cries at noon.

Because he did not kill me before I had a baby, my mother became my grave, and the baby was always heavy.

Why did I see toil and sorrow when I was born, so that my days would be consumed by shame?
