Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, ‘My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds, and everything they have, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in the land of Goshen.’.

Joseph selected five of his brothers and led them to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh asked Joseph’s brothers, ‘What is your business?’ They said to Pharaoh, ‘Your servant is a shepherd, even our ancestors are shepherds.’.

They also said to Pharaoh, “The famine in the land of Canaan is severe, and there is no grass for our servants’ flocks to eat. Therefore, we have come to this land to sojourn.”. Now let your servant dwell in the land of Goshen.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.”,

The land of Egypt is before you, but let your father and your brothers live in the best part of the land. They can live in Goshen Land. If you know any capable person among them, send them to take care of my livestock.

Joseph brought his father Jacob into front of Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed him.

Pharaoh asked Jacob, “What are the years of your life?”?

Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my sojourn in this world are one hundred and thirty years old, and the years of my life are few and bitter, not as long as the years of my ancestors’ sojourn in this world.”.

Jacob blessed Pharaoh again and went out from before him.

Joseph followed Pharaoh’s orders and gave his father and brothers the best land of Egypt, which was within the territory of Ramses, to reside as an inheritance.

Joseph provided food for his father and his brothers, as well as for his father’s entire family, according to their population.

The famine was severe, and there was no food in the whole land, so much so that the people of Egypt and Canaan fainted due to the famine.

Joseph gathered all the silver from the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan, which was the money for everyone to buy grain. Joseph then brought the silver to Pharaoh’s palace.

All the silver in Egypt and Canaan has been spent, and all the people of Egypt came to Joseph, saying, “Our silver has been used up. Please give us food. Why did we die before you?”?

Joseph said, If the silver is used up, give me your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock.

So they drove the livestock to Joseph, and Joseph exchanged food for their cattle, sheep, donkeys, and horses. That year, in exchange for all their livestock, they were fed with food.

That year passed, and the following year they came to Joseph again, saying, We do not hide from my lord: all our silver has been spent, and all our livestock have become my lord. We have nothing left in front of my lord except our bodies and fields.

How can you bear to see us all die in the wilderness? Please use grain to buy our land, and we and our land will serve Pharaoh. Please give us seeds so that we may live and not die, and the land may not be desolate.

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, and every Egyptian sold their own land due to famine. That land belongs to the Pharaoh.

As for the people, Joseph ordered them to return to their respective cities from one side of Egypt to the other.

Joseph did not buy the land of the priests, because the priests had a regular stipend from Pharaoh. They eat the regular salary given by Pharaoh, so they do not sell their land.

Joseph said to the people, “Today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Look, there is seed for you here, so you can plant the land.”.

When you harvest grain later on, you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh, and the fourth part shall be for you as seed in the land and as food for you and your families and children.

They said, you saved our lives. May we find favor in the eyes of my lord, and become servants of Pharaoh.

So Joseph established a tradition for the land of Egypt, and to this day Pharaoh will receive one-fifth of it, but the land of the priests will not belong to Pharaoh.

The Israelites lived in the land of Goshen in Egypt. They established an industry there and gave birth to many children.

Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years, and the days of his life were one hundred and forty-seven years old.

As the time of Israel’s death approached, he called his son Joseph and said, “If I find favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh and treat me with love and honesty. Do not bury me in Egypt.”.

When I sleep with my ancestors, you shall take me out of Egypt and bury me in the place where they were buried. Joseph said, I will do according to your command.

Jacob said, Swear to me. Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshipped God on the head of the bed.
