Genesis_Chapter 37
Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father was a sojourner.
Jacob’s summary is as follows. Joseph was seventeen years old and shepherded sheep with his brothers. He is a boy who often stays with his father’s concubines Bilhah and Zilpah’s sons. Joseph reported the evil deeds of his brothers to their father.
Israel loved Joseph more than his sons, because Joseph was born in his old age. He made a colorful coat for Joseph.
Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than they loved them, and they hated Joseph and did not speak to him in peace.
Joseph had a dream and told his brothers, and they hated him even more.
Joseph said to them, “Listen to the dreams I have dreamed.”,
We are bundling crops in the field, my bundle stands up, and your bundle comes and bows around my bundle.
His brothers replied, “Do you really want to be our king?”? Do you really want to govern us? They hated him even more because of his dreams and words.
Later, he had another dream and told his brothers, “Look, I have another dream where the sun, moon, and eleven stars bow down to me.”.
Joseph told his father and his brothers about this dream, and his father rebuked him, saying, What dream are you dreaming of. Is it true that your mother and your brothers will come and bow down to you on the ground?
His brothers were all jealous of him, but his father kept this in his heart.
Joseph’s brothers went to Shechem to release their father’s sheep.
Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers grazing sheep in Shechem?”? You come, I will send you to their place. Joseph said, I am here.
Israel said, Go and see if your brothers are safe, and if the flock is safe. Come back and report to me. So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.
Someone met him walking lost in the field and asked him, “What are you looking for?”?
He said, I am looking for my brothers, please tell me where they are grazing sheep.
The person said, They have already left, and I heard them say they want to go to Dotan. Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.
They saw him from a distance, and before he even approached, everyone conspired to kill him,
Say to each other, look. The dreamer has arrived.
Come on. We killed him and threw him into a pit, saying that an evil beast had eaten him. Let’s see what his dream will be like in the future.
Reuben heard and wanted to rescue him from their hands, saying, We shall not harm his life.
And he said, Do not shed his blood; cast him into this pit in the wilderness, and do not lay hands on him. The meaning of “Liu Ben” is to rescue him from their hands and return him to his father.
When Joseph arrived at his brothers, they stripped him of his coat, which was the colorful robe he was wearing,
Throw him into the pit. That pit is empty, there is no water inside.
They sat down to eat, looked up, and saw a group of Ishmaelites from Midian coming from Gilead, carrying spices, frankincense, and myrrh on camels to bring down to Egypt.
Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it for us to kill our brother and hide his blood?”?
Why don’t we sell him to the Ishmaelites and not harm him. Because he is our brother, our flesh and blood. And all the brothers obeyed him.
Some Midian merchants passed by there, and their brothers pulled Joseph up from the pit and agreed to sell him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.
When Reuben returned to the edge of the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes,
Go back to the brothers and say, the boy is gone. Where should I go?
They slaughtered a male goat and stained Joseph’s colorful robe with blood,
Send someone to their father and say, ‘We found this.’. Please recognize that it’s your son’s coat, isn’t it,
He recognized it and said, “This is my son’s coat.”. An evil beast ate him, and Joseph was torn to pieces. Teared apart.
Jacob tore his clothes and put linen around his waist, mourning for his son for many days.
His children all rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, saying, I will mourn and go down to hell to my son. Joseph’s father wept for him.
The Midianites brought Joseph to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, the chief guard of Pharaoh’s retainers.
