Genesis_Chapter 34
Dinah, the daughter that Leah gave birth to Jacob, went out to see the women of that land.
When Shechem, the son of Hamor, the Lord of the land, saw her, he grabbed her and committed adultery with her, defiling her.
Shechem’s heart was devoted to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved her, comforting her with sweet words.
Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Please betroth this woman as my wife.”.
Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah. At that time, his sons were in the field with the herd of livestock, and Jacob remained silent until they returned.
Hamor, the father of Shechem, came out to Jacob to discuss with him.
When Jacob’s sons heard this, they returned from the field, and everyone was angry and very angry. Because Shechem had committed a shameful act in the house of Israel, engaging in adultery with Jacob’s daughter, which was not to be done.
Hamor consulted with them and said, “My son Shechem’s heart desires this woman. Please give her to my son as his wife.”.
You are betrothed to each other. You can give your daughter to us, or you can marry our daughter.
You can live with us. This land is all before you, just live here, do business, and establish an estate.
Shechem said to his daughter’s father and brothers, ‘May I find favor in your eyes. Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you.’.
No matter how much dowry and gifts you ask me, I will give them to you as you say. Just give me the woman as my wife.
Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceitful words because he had defiled their sister Dinah,
Tell them, we cannot give our sister to someone who has not been circumcised as a wife, because that is our shame.
Only one thing can be agreed upon, if all your males are circumcised, just like us,
We will give our daughters to you and marry your daughters. We will live with you and become the same people together.
If you do not listen to us being circumcised, we will take our sister and leave.
Hamor and his son Shechem liked these words.
The young man did this without delay, because he loved Jacob’s daughter. He is also the most respected person in his father’s family.
Hamor and his son Shechem went to the entrance of this city and said to the people of this city,
These people are in harmony with us. It’s better to allow them to live in this land and do business. This land is also spacious enough to accommodate them. We can marry their daughter, or we can marry our daughter to them.
There is only one thing we must do before they will agree to live with us and become the same people, that is, all the males among us must be circumcised, just like them.
Will not their herds, goods, and all their livestock belong to us? As long as we obey them, they will live with us.
Everyone who enters and exits the city gate obeys the words of Hamor and his son Shechem. So all the males who entered and exited the city gate were circumcised.
On the third day, while everyone was in pain, Jacob’s two sons, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, each wielded a sword and came to the city at an unexpected moment, killing all the men,
And he killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and left.
Jacob’s sons came to the slain and plundered the city because their sister had been defiled,
Take away their flocks, herds of cattle, donkeys, and everything in the city and fields.
And he took away all their goods, children, women, and everything in their houses.
Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, ‘You have implicated me, causing me to have a bad reputation among the inhabitants of this land, even among the Canaanites and Perizzites.’. Since my population is scarce, they will gather and kill me, and I and my whole family will be destroyed.
They said, Shall he treat our girls like prostitutes?
