Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years, which was the age of Sarah’s life.
Sarah died in Kiriath Aba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. Abraham mourned and wept for her.
Later, Abraham stood up from before the dead and said to the Hittites,
I am an outsider and a sojourner among you. Please give me a piece of land here so that I can bury my dead and keep her out of my sight.
The Hittites answered Abraham, saying,
My lord, please listen. You are a great prince among us, just bury your dead in our best cemetery. We don’t allow you to bury your dead in his grave.
Abraham stood up and bowed down to the Hittites of that land,
And say to them, If you intend for me to bury my dead, so that she may not be in my sight, then listen to my words and ask Ephron the son of Zohar for me,
Give me the Maipila hole on the field. He can sell it to me at full price as my burial ground among you.
At that time, Ephron was sitting among the Hittites. So Ephron the Hittite said to Abraham in front of the Hittites who were entering and leaving the city gate,
Otherwise, my lord, please listen. I will give you this field, even the hole in the field, in front of my fellow countrymen, to bury your dead.
Abraham bowed before the people of that land,
And he said to Ephron in front of them, If you agree, please listen to my words. I will give you the land price, please accept it, and I will bury my dead there.
Ephron answered Abraham, saying,
My lord, please listen. What is a field worth four hundred shekels of silver between us? Just bury your dead.
Abraham obeyed Ephron and gave him four hundred shekels of silver, which he had bought and sold, as he had spoken before the Hittites.
So, the field in front of Mamre and Ephron, along with the cave in it, and the trees around the field,
All of them were destined to belong to Abraham, whom he bought in front of the Hittites and those who entered and exited the city gates.
Afterwards, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in a cave in the field of Machpelah in front of Manre in the land of Canaan. Manri is Hebron.
From then on, the field and its cave were designated by the Hittites as a burial ground for Abraham.
