When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the Almighty God.”. You should be a perfect person in front of me,

I will make a covenant with you, making your descendants extremely numerous.

Abram fell to the ground. And God said to him,

I make a covenant with you that you will be a father to many nations.

From now on, your name will no longer be Abram, but Abraham, because I have made you a father to many nations.

I will make your descendants extremely numerous. The kingdom is established from you, and kings emerge from you.

I will establish my covenant with you and your descendants for generations, as an eternal covenant, to be your God and your descendants.

I will give you and your descendants the land where you are currently residing, all the land of Canaan, as an inheritance forever, and I will be their God.

God said to Abraham, “You and your descendants will keep my covenant for generations to come.”.

All of you men must undergo circumcision. This is the covenant I have made with you and your descendants, which you must keep.

You shall all be circumcised, and this is the evidence of my covenant with you.

For generations, every male born in your household or purchased with silver from outsiders outside of your descendants shall be circumcised on the eighth day of their birth.

Both those born in your family and those you bought with money must undergo circumcision. So my covenant will be established in your flesh as an eternal covenant.

But a man who is not circumcised shall be cut off from his people, because he has broken my covenant.

And God said to Abraham, Your wife Sarai shall no longer be called Sarai, but her name shall be Sarah.

I will bless her and give you a son from her. I will bless her, and she will also be the mother of many nations. A king of the people will surely come out of her.

Abraham fell down on the ground and laughed, thinking to himself, “Can a person who is one hundred years old still have children?”? Sarah is already ninety years old, can she still have children?

Abraham said to God, May Ishmael live before you.

God said, Otherwise, your wife Sarah will give birth to a son for you, and you will name him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an eternal covenant for his descendants.

As for Ishmael, I also agree with you: I will bless him and make him prosper and multiply greatly. He will give birth to twelve tribal leaders, and I will make him a great nation.

At this time next year, Sarah will give birth to Isaac to you, and I will establish my covenant with him.

After God finished speaking to Abraham, he left him and went up.

On that same day, Abraham did as God commanded and circumcised his son Ishmael and all the men in the house, whether they were born at home or bought with money.

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised.

His son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised.

On that same day, Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised together.

All members of the family, whether they were born at home or bought with money from outsiders, were also circumcised together.
