Samuel I_Chapter 16
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, who I have despised as king of Israel?”? You filled the horn with ointment, and I sent you to Jesse the Bethlehem. Because I have reserved a king among his sons.
Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears, he will surely kill me. The Lord said, Take a calf with you, and he said, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
Please invite Jesse to come and eat the sacrificial meat, and I will show you what to do. You should anoint the person I pointed out to you.
Samuel did according to the word of the Lord. When they arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the city trembled and came out to meet him, asking him, “Are you here for peace?”?
He said, For the sake of peace, I am offering sacrifices to the Lord. Cleanse yourselves and come with me to eat the sacrificial meat. Samuel consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to come and eat the sacrificial meat.
When they came, Samuel saw Eliab and said to himself, “The anointed one of the Lord will surely be before him.”.
But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not consider his appearance or his height; I will not choose him. For the Lord does not judge men as men judge their appearance. The Lord looks into his heart.
Jesse asked Abinadab to pass by before Samuel, and Samuel said, The Lord has not chosen him either.
Jesse also called Shamah to pass by before Samuel, and Samuel said, The Lord has not chosen him either.
Jesse asked his seven sons to pass by before Samuel, and Samuel said, ‘These are not the things that the Lord has chosen.’.
Samuel said to Jesse, Are all your sons here? He replied, “There’s still a small one, I’m herding sheep now.”. Samuel said to Jesse, “Send someone to call him.”. If he doesn’t come, we won’t sit at the table.
Jesse sent someone to call him. He has a bright red face, beautiful eyes, and a handsome appearance. The Lord said, “This is him. Get up and anoint him.”.
Samuel anointed him among his brothers with the oil from the horn. From this day on, the Spirit of the Lord moved David greatly. Samuel stood up and went back to Ramah.
The spirit of the Lord left Saul, and demons came from the Lord to disturb him.
Saul’s servants said to him, “Now a demon is coming from God to disturb you.”.
Our Lord may command the servants before us to find someone who is skilled at playing the harp. When the demon from God comes upon you, let him play the harp with his hand, and you will be healed.
Saul said to his servants, “Find someone who is good at playing the piano and bring them to me.”.
One of the young men said, “I have seen a son of Jesse, a Bethlehem man, who is skilled at playing the harp and is a brave warrior. He speaks well and has a beautiful appearance, and the Lord is with him.”.
So Saul sent messengers to Jesse, saying, Send David, your son who is tending sheep, to me.
Jesse then carried a few loaves, a skin of wine, and a young goat on a donkey and handed them over to his son David to send to Saul.
David arrived at Saul and stood before him. Saul greatly loved him, and he became Saul’s weapon bearer.
Saul sent someone to Jesse and said, “Please allow David to stand before me, because he has found favor in my sight.”.
When the demon from God came upon Saul, David took the harp and played it with his hand, and Saul felt relieved and the demon left him.
