Chronicles of the Past Dynasties_Chapter 23
David was old and satisfied with his days, so he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
David gathered all the leaders of Israel and the Levites priests.
The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and above, with a total of 38000 males.
Among them, 24000 were in charge of the affairs of the Lord’s temple, and 6000 served as officials and judges,
Four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised the Lord with instruments made by David.
David divided the sons of Levi, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, into divisions.
The descendants of Gershon were Ladan and Shimei.
The eldest son of Radan was Jehiel, along with Zitan and Joel, three in total.
The sons of Shimei were Shelomith, Hazael, and Haran. This is the leader of the Ladan tribe.
The sons of Shimei were Jaha, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah, four in total.
Jaha is the eldest son, and Zisa is the second son. But the descendants of Jeush and Beria are not many, so they are considered one tribe.
The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four in total.
The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were separated to set apart the most holy things, to burn incense before the Lord, to serve him, and to bless him in his name forever.
As for Moses the man of God, his descendants are named in the book of the tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.
The eldest son of Geshun was Xibuye.
The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah. Eliezer had no other sons, but Rehabiah had many descendants.
The eldest son of Ezra was Shelomith.
The eldest son of Hebron was Jeriah, the second son was Amalia, the third son was Jahaziel, and the fourth son was Jekamian.
Uzziel’s eldest son was Micah, and his second son was Jessiah.
The sons of Mirali were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.
Eleazar died without any sons, only daughters. The sons of Kish, their own clan, married them.
The sons of Mushi: Moriel, Eder, and Jerimoth, three in total.
The sons of Levi, who were the heads of their families, were responsible for the affairs of the Lord’s temple, from twenty years old and above, according to the number of males.
David said, The Lord, the God of Israel, has brought peace to his people, and he will dwell in Jerusalem forever.
The Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all the utensils used in it.
As David commanded at the end of his life, the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above.
Their duty is to serve the descendants of Aaron, to work in the temple of the Lord, in the courtyard, and in the house, to purify all holy things, to do the work of the temple of God,
And manage the display cakes, fine flour for grain offerings, or unleavened pancakes, or baked goods, or mixed with oil, and manage all kinds of measuring scales.
Every morning and evening, stand up to give thanks and praise to the Lord,
And on the Sabbath, on the new moon, and during festivals, offer burnt offerings to the Lord according to the number and tradition.
He also guarded the tabernacle of the congregation and the holy place, and kept the charge of the Lord to their brothers, the descendants of Aaron, to do the work of the Lord’s temple.
