The word of the Lord came to Jonah again, saying,

Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh, proclaim the words I have commanded you to its inhabitants.

Then Jonah rose up according to the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. This Nineveh is a huge city, with a three-day journey.

Jonah walked into the city for a day and declared, ‘Wait another forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown.’.

The people of Nineveh believed in God and declared a fast, from the greatest to the smallest, wearing linen clothes.

This information reached the ears of the king of Nineveh, and he dismounted from his throne, took off his royal robe, draped himself in linen, and sat in the ashes.

He also sent a proclamation throughout the city of Nineveh, saying, The king and his ministers have a decree that no one shall taste anything, and livestock, cattle, or sheep shall not eat grass, nor drink water.

Both humans and livestock should be draped with linen, and people should earnestly call on God. Everyone turns back from their evil ways, abandoning the violence in their hands.

It is unknown whether God will change his mind and repent, not to anger, so that we may not perish.

So God examined their behavior and saw that they had turned away from the evil way. He regretted not bringing the disaster he had said to them.
