Shi Shi Ji_Chapter 2
The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokkim and said to the Israelites, ‘I have brought you up from Egypt and brought you to the land that I swore to your ancestors.’. I also said, I will never abandon the covenant I have made with you.
You shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land to demolish their altars. You didn’t listen to me. Why does this work?
Therefore I say again, I will not drive them out from before you. They will be thorns under your ribs. Their God will be your net.
When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all Israel, the people let out their voices and wept.
So he named the place Bojin (meaning to cry). There, everyone offered sacrifices to the Lord.
When Joshua sent the people of Israel, they each returned to their own land and occupied it.
During Joshua’s lifetime and after his death, while the elders who saw the great things that the Lord had done for Israel were still alive, the people served the Lord.
Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.
The Israelites buried him in the territory of his inheritance, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Kashgar.
That generation also returned to their ancestors. Later on, another generation emerged, unaware of the Lord or the actions that the Lord did for the Israelites.
The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and went to serve the Baals,
He abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and went to worship other gods, the gods of the surrounding nations, to provoke the Lord to anger.
And he abandoned the Lord and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
The anger of the Lord was raging against the Israelites, and he handed them over to those who plundered them. He also handed them over to the hands of his enemies on all sides, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.
Wherever they go, the Lord attacks them with disaster, just as the Lord has said and as the Lord has sworn to them. They were extremely distressed.
The Lord raised up judges, who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them.
But they did not listen to the teachers, but followed and worshipped other gods, engaging in fornication and quickly deviating from the path of their ancestors, not as their ancestors obeyed the command of the Lord.
The Lord raised up judges for them and was with them. Throughout all the days of the teachers on earth, the Lord saved them from the hands of their enemies. They mourned and sighed because they were oppressed and harassed, so the Lord regretted it.
After the death of the teachers, they turned away and did evil, even more so than their ancestors. They went to serve and worship other gods, constantly putting an end to their stubborn evil deeds.
So the anger of the Lord erupted against the Israelites. He said, Because this people have disobeyed the covenant that I commanded their ancestors to keep, and have not obeyed my words,
So I will no longer drive out the remaining tribes from before Joshua when he dies,
To test the Israelites through this, to see if they are willing to keep and walk in my way according to their ancestors.
So the Lord left all the tribes behind and did not drive them out quickly, nor did he deliver them into the hands of Joshua.
